The word “Tafseer” is derived from the Arabic stem “Fasara”, which means to explain, clarify, elucidate, and point out. So, the word Tafseer in general aims at clarifying matters, and bringing their obscure sides to light.
Tafseer meaning in Islam isn’t any different; as the Tafseer of the Quran is supposed to bring about the results of intellectual meditation, and knowledge hunting that would lead to uncovering the secrets of the Quran, and shedding stark light on its meanings.
Quran Tafseer would usually include an explanation of the meaning of a verse, clarification of the context that accompanied its revelation, an argument of the reason behind its revelation, and highlighting its most important lessons to Muslims.

As for the Quran Tafseer, it’s advisable to wait until they are familiar with the Quran, and the Arabic language; because it can be a bit difficult to study Tafseer, and understand it academically without being able to read the Quran, and understand the linguistic meaning of its words.

So, while they help you prepare their breakfast, ask them to start a conversation on the subject, and discuss with them how to integrate that lesson in their daily life.
4- Learning Quranic concepts for children:
Your kid might find some difficulty studying his Tafseer lessons at first; due to being crowded with Quranic terms and concepts; so, help them learn these Quranic concepts.
As they are children, everything they do must be in a fun manner; so, you can prepare some educational games for them; such as: matching cards, singing songs, or making stories.
5- Learning more about Quranic stories:
Learning more about Quranic stories will clarify many matters for your kid, and will make their Tafseer lesson clearer and simpler.
There are many animation shows on the stories and the characters of the Quran that target kids out there; so, let them pick a show, and watch it with them. Make it more beneficial for them by discussing the content of the show with them.
All parents around the world wish to shield their kids from the insanity of the world we live in, and us – Muslim parents – know that to protect our kids, the only way is through teaching them the sciences of the Quran. May Allah grant us the ability to protect them.
What are the types of Quran Tafseer that kids are allowed to learn?
All types of Quran Tafseer are allowed for kids to learn, as long as the material content of the texts of Tafseer is made easy enough to suit the understanding capabilities of the little ones.
In fact, there are several ways through which Quran exegesis can be conducted:
1- Using the Quran to produce Tafseer of the Quran:
In this type of Quran Tafseer, the Mufaser (the one who attempts the explanation) uses verses of the Quran as guidance in understanding the meaning of other verses.
In Surah An-Nisa, verse 34, Allah Almighty uses the word “واضربوهن” when talking about how men can guide his wife back to the track if she goes astray. The word itself is understood by many religious scholars to refer to the act of hitting and beating, but other Islamic scholars have argued that it meant separation, and used the other verses of the Quran in which the word was used to point out that in all of them it didn’t refer to beating someone, but to the action of separating things.
2- Using the prophet’s Sunnah (PBUH) to get Tafseer of the Quran:
The prophet’s Sunnah (PBUH) offers a credible source of the Tafseer of the Quran; as in many incidents he would be asked about the meaning of a certain verse, and sometimes he would give a detailed clarification of what a Quranic verse has briefly mentioned.
In providing Tafseer of “…Not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.” of Surah Al-Fatehah, Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “When the Imam says: ‘Ghair-il-Maghdubi `alaihim Walad-Dallin (i.e. not the path of those who earn Your Anger, nor the path of those who went astray (1.7)), then you must say, ‘Ameen’, for if one’s utterance of ‘Ameen’ coincides with that of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven”.
3- Explaining the Quran through the Sahabah’s teachings:
The credibility of the explanations of the Quran provided by the Sahabah is proven through whom the Sahabah are, and the kind of life they were leading.
The Sahabah are the prophet’s companions, who had him (PBUH) as their direct tutor, teaching them how to become good Muslims, and how to practice the teachings of the Islam properly.
Therefore, whenever Al-Sahabah couldn’t use the Quran or Sunnah to clarify a matter, they would use their own understanding of Islam, and of the Arabic language of the Quran.
Ibn ‘Abbas, one of the prophet’s companions (may Allah be pleased with him) explained verse 31 of Surah An-Nur: “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments1 except what normally appears.” pointing out that: ‘It refers to the face and hands’.
4- Tafseer of the Quran by opinion:
In the case of Tafseer of the Quran by opinion, a well-educated, and well-read Muslim scholar would use their knowledge of the Quran, Sunnah, Sharia, and all the other Islamic branches of knowledge, in addition to their deep knowledge of the Arabic language.
This method of producing Quran Tafseer is doubted by many Islamic scholars; such as: Ibn Taymiyyah; because it relies on their opinions more than pure Islamic knowledge, not to mention that they are human beings whose knowledge isn’t complete or perfect, which means their judgements are to be doubted.
There are many examples of the Tafseer of the Quran by opinion; such as: “Anwar Al-Tanzil” by Al-Baydawi, and “Mafatih Al-Ghayb” by Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi.
